Not fair (AKA I have no idea what I'm doing anymore)

I took a week of leave to go home and visit the family, as well as retrieve my PC for the gaming. But it didn't start up. At all. So I scavenged what I could, and built a new one. I had an all new processor, motherboard, power supply, and case. When I flew back, parts were ripped off, and now it doesn't really work.

It will start to run Windows, and even allow me to get to my desktop sometimes, but most of the time, as soon as it gets to the lock screen, I get a horrific red checkerboard looking thing that writhes slightly before going to black with no warning. It feels like something straight out of Yumme Nikki, and makes me feel justified if I defecated in my pants.

So because I'm an idiot, and just got paid yesterday, I guess I need to start replacing the most broken parts until I get something that works, starting with the motherboard and graphics card. Here's where I need help;
I don't know the darndest thing about motherboards. Suggestions for upper-mid tier would be greatly appreciated.
I'm also horrible at graphics cards. Last one I bought was an Nvidia GTX 660 and it never worked. My last build didn't seem to have the power supply to support it, and maybe fried it. I don't know. Suggestions for upper tier graphics card that will be supported by 700 watts would be greatly appreciated.
How dangerous is it to remove the CPU from this dead dead motherboard? I think the chip itself is fine and not smashed, but I'm not sure. Running on hopes because like I said it's brand spankin' new.

I'm not great at hardware. I can build computers no problem, but I haven't the slightest clue what's decent and what's crap, and evidently I'm awful at transporting them too.

Thanks a ton!

when did Falcon Guide get a website?

Frickin sweet.

I've learned a lot from trial and error. But mostly error.

This is what I decided on. I'm *reaaaally* hoping my CPU is going to be okay. It's not super great, but it's a nice little i5. Should be more than capable of getting the job done.

I picked up more RAM because wow it's a lot cheaper than I remember. And it can't hurt. Should have it built by the end of the week.

Thanks, man! Grin

I personally have a GTX 570, 2.5GB and it runs flawlessly. What's your CPU? I have an i5 3570k and it also runs perfectly, so if your CPU doesn't end up making it, look into that one. RAM is RAM as long as it is compatible with your MOBO. I bought 16GBs when it was 70 dollars, and the 8GB package was 40.

Good luck with rebuilding your setup!

TODAY. A while back, it's updated more often than the tinyurl image.

You're welcome sir, hope all goes well.

I'm also packing the 3570k.
There was nothing *wrong* with my old build. Then I discovered PhysX and got really greedy, ruining everything. My rebuild was looking good, but then 2 plane rides through the unfortunately turbulent airspace of Detroit wrecked the insides.

But Imma get it right this time.

I'm running that 660 ti right now and let me tell you, thing is great bang for your buck.

And yeah, RAM is RAM. The only thing is if you're running a 660ti and a 3570k i'm assuming you'll be overclocking this thing at one point or another, so you may or may not want to spring the extra 5 or so dollars for a heat spreader on your RAM. It doesn't help MUCH, but considering you're running an nvidia card you can take all the help you can get cooling your case down short of sticking 300 fans in the damn thing.

And do make sure you get a case big enough. That 660ti is xboxhuge and depending on your mobo layout you might have to work with it a bit.

olol, my graphics card is between "Minimum" and "Destitute".

Mine isn't even on the list anymore because they don't sell it Inverse-d

That was a lesson I learned previously. I had to crowbar a bunch of plastic and metal from the back of my old case to fit one. Every swing felt awful.
