Nintendo announces 2DS

It's not surprising that Nintendo has announced another dual screen console, however the design of this one looks like it was inspired by the Wii U controller.

The new slab design will work exactly like a normal 3DS; it will be able to play normal DS games as well as 3DS games and all of the features that come with them, the only difference being it only has one speaker which supports only mono sound (however full surround sound with headphones in) and well you guessed it, no 3D.

This console will be released at the same time as the new pokemon games and will be priced at $129, around £83. It's supposed to be targeted at childred under the age of 7, but is this the kind of thing you would buy?

Why remove the folding function? Seriously, that's like the best way to protect your screen. I still have my Gameboy Advance with all its glorious scratches. Also, this thing looks like it will not fit in normal pockets. Still, the idea of a budget 3DS isn't inherently bad, but it was poorly executed in my opinion.

You're right, the 3DS will need some way to protect those screens whilst you've got it in your bag using the street pass features, and I'm not too sure about how the console will work whilst it's in your hands.

I really love the r and l buttons on the top of it. It looks like it will feel and function like the Wii U tablet, if I didn't already have a 3ds I would probably grab the first bundle of the 2ds.

iPads don't fold or fit in your pocket either.

Remember this is being targeted towards 7yr olds and under who want tablet like devices.

They did mess up the folding on the 3DS though; the border of the bottom screen leaves marks on the top screen.

But yeah, it's not as sleek or practical or anything as a proper 3DS, but it isn't targetted at us. Remember that the 3D isn't considered safe for under 6 (although I don't believe there's any actual evidence to suggest it's dangerous), and a lot of children younger than that had DSs, especially with Pokémon coming out.
I'm just kind of disappointed it's not a bigger price reduction though; it's about 25% off, but it's still only about as much as a pre-owned 3DS, and interviews/Iwata Asks always said that the 3D screen was the biggest cost involved in producing it. Supposedly it's actually really comfortable, though.

Realistically it helps everyone out in the long run. Reluctant parents, Nintendo's sales, penny-pinchers, the poor, etc. I probably would have bought one of these had I missed out on the Pikachu 3DS XL. Even though I already have my awesome 3DS XL I want a 2DS for some strange reason...

It would have been nice to see the XL's screen sizes carry over to the 2DS.

I personally like the 2DS's design. It's nostalgic Grin

Open screens question: Remember the original GBA? GameGear? GameBoy Color/Pocket? Get a some screen protectors and a skin for it.

The 2ds is like a tablet with buttons, that plays 3ds games, what more could you want? Don't answer that, it was a rhetorical question. When my current 3ds breaks, I will probably buy the 2ds as replacement.
